PET Lamp project
Installation of the PET Lamp Project created by Alvaro Catalán de Ocón, produced and distributed by ACdO
It was during a 2011 workshop about environmental responsibility in Colombia that Alvaro Catalán de Ocón had the idea of restoring value to used bottles made of PET (polyethylene terephtalate) by retrieving these used products and transforming them into suspensions. All over the world, the recycling of bottles is a real concern. This project proposes to restore certain qualities to a plentiful but poor material by appropriating an object earmarked as waste and using the extremely beautiful craft techniques of basketry which exist in the four corners of the world.
PET Lamp project proposes to give back qualities to an abundant but poor material by diverting an object destined for waste and using the most beautiful craft basketry techniques existing in the four corners of the globe: Colombia, Chile, Ethiopia, Japan, etc.
The PET Lamp project demonstrates Alvaro Catalán de Ocón’s desire to support and promote local craftsmanship while using production techniques that are more respectful of our environment. By ensuring regular orders to these communities of artisans (Colombia, Chile, Ethiopia...), Alvaro Catalán de Ocón participates in their development and perpetuates their economic activity.
