Fabien Cappello, Variations autour de la lumière
Presentation in the permanent collections
Many designers are invited as part of the Design Thursdays programme. Once a year, the MADD Bordeaux asks one of them to share his thoughts and show a selection of his works. In 2016, the MADD Bordeaux has chosen to invite Fabien Cappello, a London-based French designer, who will be presenting a set of lights designed on the basis of research into transparency and a line of thinking about colour, until 25 July. These pieces are being installed in the place of the current lights, in order to illuminate two of the museum’s rooms in a novel way.
The luminaires of Fabien Cappello are distinguished by this singular exercise of perforations whose rhythm is dictated according to the desired lighting. It reflects a subtle and discreet drawing work that gives each element composing the lamps a formal quality while acting on the quality of the light.
The particularity of the Bright Rays lamp collection is to be built as a Meccano®, element by element, from perforated metal plates, lacquered in bright colors and colorless glass blades. They take up existing typologies: the library lamp, the bedside lamp and the desk lamp, the mood lamp with more indirect lighting.
The two other luminaires, designed for the Nilufar gallery, seek to give shape to the light.
The Column light in particular, a room over two meters high, is presented as a hollow volume irradiating space without revealing the light source. These lamps, inspired by North African craftsmanship, are produced from parts made in a factory that mainly produces metal filters and grilles for all kinds of industries. The galvanized sheet undergoes a surface treatment so that light catches on it and is not reflected there.
A visit booklet, enriched with a notebook of images, allows visitors to immerse themselves in the heart of the designer’s research and sources of inspiration.
The MADD Bordeaux also exhibits creations by Fabien Tering as part of the "Vitrines sur l'Art" at the Galeries Lafayette from 4 to 30 July 2016. Are presented his pieces of urban furniture designed for the city of London.
