In the end together
Installation extended to 22 September
Work by Matthieu Haberard created at the Maroquinerie de Guyenne (Saint-Vincent-de-Paul, Gironde) as part of the artists' residency program of the Fondation d'entreprise Hermès (2022)
"This sculpture is the last in a series of large wooden swords that have emerged as a symbol and catalyst for many of the issues in my work. It is the wooden sword of childhood with which we learn to attack, to defend ourselves, and with which we learn the concept of violence. During the period of childhood and adolescence, the violence is a ground from which I draw my forms and my visual language, which is inspired by fantasy or the street. We worked on the blade in the manner of a tail made of handmade scales. The blade becomes an organic and smooth element in contrast to its original state."
Matthieu Haberard
Graduated from the Beaux-Arts de Paris in 2016, Matthieu Haberard (born in Toulouse in 1991) lives and works in the Paris. His practice focuses on the liminal zone between adulthood and childhood. His sculptures are meticulously made by hand, consciously ignoring technological production techniques, the aspects of "deconstruction" being dominant in his work. Each work is the consequence of an encounter between idea and process, creating systems of production applied as a micro-universe. His sculptures and paintings are an evocation of the intuition found in children, a voluntary abandonment of reason, the consequence in the face of the constraints of language. The artist finds some of his forms in the embryonic thoughts of hypnagogy, oscillating between insomnia and deep sleep, where his various historical references hybridize with his current intuitions.
The artist would like to thank all the craftsmen who collaborated in the creation of the work: Florence Arnouil, Brice Ayer, Florence Boudaric, Emmanuel de Braye, Robin Doz, Lisa Hachette, Gilia Honnet, Léo Jaulin, Stéphanie Pagnoux, Rodrigo Pain, Hugo Tesson, Séverine Toutain, Karine Van Zandt.
