This presentation takes place at the launch time of a call for applications to renovate of the former prison.

The madd-bordeaux is characterized by a contrasted architectural configuration: a mansion of the finest Bordeaux architecture of the Enlightenment century to show the decorative arts collection and a former prison, operating between 1886 and 1964, a functional building to exhibit design – field born in the 19th century, which also links form to function. These two different buildings however, constitute a homogeneous ensemble, built with stones of the same color.

The restructuring project of the museum, and more specifically of the former prison, makes us look at all the buildings of the industrial era that have been either invested by artists or converted for cultural purposes.

Echoing this reflection, we are showing here the photographs of Bernd and Hilla Becher, who, with their documentary or even encyclopedic approach, have shed light on the mechanomorphic beauty of these industrial buildings.

We warmly thank the CAPC for the loan of four series of photographs by Bernd and Hilla Becher and the Archives Bordeaux Métropole for their collaboration in the research about the prison history.
