The madd-bordeaux starts its metamorphosis

The Museum of Decorative Arts and Design in Bordeaux (madd-bordeaux) is starting a new chapter in its history with a major restructuring, restoration and rehabilitation project.

Since 2013, the madd-bordeaux team has been offering a programme that brings together the decorative arts and design, which has considerably renewed and increased the museum's audience. This development has led to the creation of a project to modernise and rehabilitate the part dedicated to Design, which will make it possible to bring together the two buildings of the museum, which have been listed as historical monuments since 2018: the former prison built at the end of the 19th century (new exhibition space since 2016) and the Hôtel de Lalande built at the end of the 18th century. The winners of the architectural competition are two young architects Aymeric Antoine and Pierre Dufour, Agence Antoine Dufour.
Supported by the City of Bordeaux, the State and a private sponsor, this project responds to the environmental and heritage issues involved in restoring and rehabilitating the old prison and renovating the Hôtel de Lalande to make it more energy efficient. The objective is to preserve the very strong and particular atmosphere of each of the two buildings, their identity and their architectural interest.

⏵A sustainable renovation of the former prison
The renovation project consists of investing in the existing building by renewing its functionality, updating its habitability, and adapting it to the current uses of a contemporary museum, in an eco-responsible approach rather than creating a building ex-nihilo.
The work will focus on the old prison, which will be renovated and connected to the heating network. The reception areas and public circulation between the two buildings will also be redesigned and brought up to accessibility standards.
The project includes the use of recyclable and bio-sourced materials, and significant work will be carried out on the insulation to allow significant access to natural light and constant natural ventilation.

⏵Towards a new Museum of Decorative Arts and Design, a player in the transformation of society
A contemporary, lively, creative, innovative, daring, committed, open and accessible museum for all

The madd-bordeaux will present a new programme and take a fresh look at its cultural role in a profoundly transformed society, and at how it welcomes the public. A new tour route will highlight the highlights of the collection, the issues of memory and heritage, and the representations of women artists. This project will enable the madd-bordeaux to respond to the new societal expectations and practices of the public (workshops, artistic and cultural education courses, meetings, conferences).

⏵From 2023 to 2025, the madd-bordeaux will continue its activity
The madd-bordeaux will continue its mission of conservation, restoration and study of the collections, education and transmission of culture by proposing during these three years a rich physical programme in the city and on the territory (exhibitions, meetings with schoolchildren and students, conferences...) and in digital (video capsule, webseries, podcasts...)
