Jean-Philippe Toussaint Decorative

Jean-Philippe Toussaint & Co (Ange Leccia et Anna Toussaint) invest the rooms of the madd-bordeaux

from 19.06.2019
to 21.10.2019

An exhibition presented as part of the Bordeaux 2019 Liberty! cultural season

Why and how to show the work of a writer in a museum?

The project stems first of all from the circumstances: the international conference "Lire, voir, penser l'œuvre de Jean-Philippe Toussaint" organized in Bordeaux by Le Belvédère littéraire francophone de la Nouvelle Aquitaine from June 18 to 21, 2019. Therefore, the idea of hosting in parallel the author of La Salle de bain, L’Appareilphoto, La Télévision in the Museum of Decorative Arts and Design is obvious.
If, in a museum, we get to see objects, it is important for us today to make room for words. The words of Jean-Philippe Toussaint and his sentences, whose construction is very close to the creative process in design, or any other form of art.

The artist Ange Leccia joins Jean-Philippe Toussaint to create images and film editing that accompany the various excerpts from novels - Faire l’amourFuir, La Vérité sur Marie - read by the author.
Anna Toussaint, graphic designer and typographer, imagines installations to read extracts from the novel La Télévision.

La Chaise, unpublished text written by Jean-Philippe Toussaint for the exhibition, is on sale exclusively at the madd-bordeaux.

Jean-Philippe Toussaint
Jean-Philippe Toussaint was born in Brussels in 1957. He is a writer, filmmaker and photographer. His first novel, La Salle de bain, was published in 1985 by Éditions de Minuit. He is the author of fifteen books, all published by Éditions de Minuit. He won the Medicis Prize in 2005 for Fuir and the December prize in 2009 for La Vérité sur Marie. His novels are translated into more than twenty languages. He directed four feature films for the cinema, including La Patinoire in 1999, and presented photo exhibitions around the world. His personal website is a creative site, which hosts drafts of his books and presents interactive literary projects. In 2012, he presented the exhibition LIVRE/LOUVRE at the Louvre Museum, an exhibition that combines photographs, videos and installations to "evoke the book without going through the written word".
