On April 22, 2026, the MADD - Museum of Decorative Arts and Design reopens its doors, marking a key step in a vast project that will continue until 2027.

Led by the City of Bordeaux, supported by the State, the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region and the European Union, this project was made possible thanks to the support and contribution of Robert G. and Elisabeth Wilmers.

An ambitious sustainable transformation
Led by the architectural firm Antoine Dufour, the MADD project aims to connect its two emblematic buildings: the mansion, built at the end of the 18th century, and the former municipal prison, dating from the end of the 19th century. The challenge is twofold: to preserve the architectural identity and unique atmosphere of these heritage sites and to adapt them to the requirements of a contemporary museum. This transformation improves the conditions of conservation and exhibition of works, while placing the museum in an eco-responsible approach.  Particular attention is paid to the fluidity of the reception and the comfort of the visit. New facilities – including two elevators and redesigned circulation systems – will make the museum fully accessible to people with reduced mobility.  Thanks to the work undertaken, a 40% reduction in energy consumption is targeted, demonstrating a concrete commitment to the ecological transition. Recycled, bio-sourced or reused materials respond to a desire to limit the environmental impact while ensuring the sustainability of the facilities. 200 tons of materials have been reused, 85% of which directly on the museum site.

A more inclusive and committed museum
The architectural transformation supports a global approach that aims to strengthen the role of the museum as a key player in the ecological, social and cultural transition in the territory. Dedicated to the enhancement of decorative arts, crafts, know-how and design in all its forms, the museum intends to take on board the major contemporary challenges and place eco-responsibility, inclusion and citizen engagement at the heart of its project.
Through its programming, MADD approaches design as a tool to think and accompany current changes, and envision a more just, sustainable and desirable world. The museum also wishes to pursue its commitment in artistic and cultural education. Its actions will primarily address the young generations with programs designed as levers of social connection and emancipation.
Finally, this renovation provides an opportunity to rethink the path of the permanent collections and its mediation. This new storytelling of the collections, which will be fully unveiled in a second phase in 2027, will integrate a plurality of points of view, in a more inclusive approach.

A reopening, in two stages, which begins at the beginning of 2026
On April 22 2026, the entire wing along Boulan Street – including the reception, shop, restaurant and new exhibition spaces– as well as the old prison will be open to the public.  Three inaugural exhibitions will be presented on this occasion
The year 2027 will mark the opening of the renovated mansion, thus completing the ambitious project to renovate the museum and a completely renewed route.
